Other than cavities, gum disease is a prevalent oral health issue that affects millions of people. Nearly half of adults in the U.S. over 30 have some form of it. While this condition may be more widespread than you initially thought, you may now wonder if it can be completely cured. Figuring out this answer can be more nuanced than you think. Here’s what you need to know.

Early Stage of Gum Disease: Gingivitis

Gum disease is often broken down into two stages, the earliest and first being gingivitis. It’s usually caused by a buildup of bacteria on your gumline, which then attacks and infects the soft tissue. When this happens, you are likely to notice redness, inflammation, and bleeding when you brush or floss.

The good news is that when this condition is caught at this point, it can be cured. Any damage done is usually able to be reversed with the proper treatment. Your dentist will be able to give you the service you need and help you learn what you can do to get back to a problem-free smile you deserve.

Mild to Severe Gum Disease: Periodontitis

When gingivitis is left untreated, it can then turn into periodontitis. This can be mild to severe, but it is an advanced stage of gum disease. Instead of sitting on and underneath your gumline, the infection has now gone deeper into the pink tissue.

Aside from the symptoms above, the structures in your mouth may also be affected. It’s common for someone’s gums to recede or end up with tooth loss in more intense cases. At this point, damage done cannot be reversed. Your dentist won’t be able to completely cure it, but rather work on preserving your oral health.

They do this by offering scaling and root planing. This is a deep cleaning that targets pockets of bacteria under your gumline. They may also offer antibiotic therapy, which can help fight off reinfection.

So, Will My Dentist Be Able to Cure My Gum Disease?

To make a long story short, gum disease can be cured when caught early, but can’t be fully fixed when it progresses. You should aim to try to prevent it in the first place with checkups and cleanings, along with a great oral hygiene routine. Learn the warning signs of this condition, so you can get the prompt treatment you deserve toward a stronger smile.
