Can Teenagers Get Dental Implants?
May 1, 2026

Losing a permanent tooth as a teenager can be frustrating and emotionally challenging. Whether the tooth was lost due to an accident, congenital absence, severe decay, or another dental issue, parents and teens often wonder if a dental implant is the best solution. While dental implants are one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth, they are not always recommended immediately for teenagers.
The reason has less to do with age and more to do with jaw development.
Why Age Matters for Dental Implants
Dental implants are designed to function like natural tooth roots. Once placed into the jawbone, they fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration, creating a stable foundation for a replacement tooth.
Unlike natural teeth, however, implants do not move or adapt as the jaw continues to grow. If an implant is placed before a teenager’s jaw has finished developing, the surrounding teeth and bone may continue to change position while the implant remains fixed.
This can result in alignment issues, bite problems, and cosmetic concerns over time.
When Are Teenagers Ready for Implants?
The ideal time for dental implant placement varies from person to person because everyone develops at a different rate. In general, dentists and oral surgeons prefer to wait until jaw growth is complete before placing implants.
For many girls, jaw growth may be finished in the late teenage years. For boys, growth often continues slightly longer and may not be complete until the late teens or early twenties.
Advanced imaging and growth assessments can help determine whether jaw development has stabilized enough for implant treatment.
What Are the Alternatives?
If a teenager is not yet ready for a dental implant, there are several temporary tooth replacement options available.
Depending on the situation, a dentist may recommend:
- A removable partial denture.
- A temporary dental appliance.
- An orthodontic solution.
- A resin-bonded bridge.
These options can help restore appearance and function while preserving space for a future implant.
Benefits of Waiting Until the Right Time
Although it can be difficult to postpone implant treatment, waiting until jaw growth is complete often leads to better long-term results. Proper timing helps ensure that the implant remains aligned with surrounding teeth and provides a stable, attractive restoration for many years.
Careful planning also reduces the likelihood of needing corrective treatment later.
Teenagers can eventually receive dental implants, but the timing of treatment is critical. Because jaw growth and dental development vary from person to person, a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the best approach.
